Dr. Bill Sterett Biography
Dr. Sterett has 20 years of experience taking care of complex athletic injuries, returning athletes to their chosen sport and continuing on the cutting edge of sports medicine as this field evolves. That now includes the use of growth factors, ultrasounds guided diagnostics and injections.
Dr. Sterett is from Santa Rosa, California, in the Sonoma County Wine Country. He completed his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry at the University of California at San Diego, where he played intercollegiate golf. He then moved to Lake Tahoe, California. After two years on the Professional Ski Patrol at Squaw Valley, CA, he entered Medical School at the University of California at Davis, where he attended on a full academic scholarship from the University of California Regents, while staying on as a National Ski Patrolman at Squaw Valley for three more years. Dr. Sterett then completed a five-year Orthopaedic Residency at UC Davis.
Dr Sterett was the first partner added at the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colorado where he functioned as a Managing Partner for many years
From California, Dr. Sterett was accepted to the prestigious Steadman Hawkins Sports Medicine Fellowship in Vail, Colorado. At the completion of his training, he was asked to stay on as a partner with Drs. Steadman and Hawkins. Prior to beginning his Vail practice, he traveled to Europe to train in orthopaedic traumatology, sports medicine and joint preservation, providing him with the opportunity to bring techniques back to this country in a very unique circumstance. Dr. Sterett stayed at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic for 18 years as Managing Partner, before leaving to join the group at Vail Summit Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine in 2011.
Dr. Sterett’s practice focuses on Knee and Shoulder Sports Medicine and athletic injuries, with particular emphasis on ACL reconstruction, revision ACL reconstruction, and joint preservation through cartilage and reconstruction techniques. His practice is divided into Clinical care, aimed at returning active people to their chosen lifestyle, Research, Education and Community Service.
Qualifications
Dr. Sterett is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, a member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and is one of the few physicians who have earned a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine.
Dr. Sterett has published more than 30 peer-reviewed articles and has lectured regionally, nationally and internationally on hundreds of occasions over the past twenty years. He currently holds patents on orthopedic devices involved in Joint Preservation and works as a consultant to Arthrex and Biomet sports medicine companies.
Athletic Training Fellowship Program
Dr. Sterett started the Athletic Training Fellowship Program in Vail, Colorado, and served as its Fellowship Director for 15 years. Additionally, he has served as the Medical Director for the Eagle County School District for 14 years, making daily return-to-play decisions and treating local student athletes. Currently, he serves as the Medical Director for the Vail Valley Surgery Centers and has for the past 12 years.
Dr Sterett is the Head Team Physician for the US Women's Ski Team
Finally, Dr. Sterett is the Head Team Physician for the US Women’s Alpine Ski Team and has been since 1997, with athletes over the years such as Picabo Street, Kristina Koznick, Caroline LaLive, Lindsey Vonn, Julia Mancuso and Mikaela Shiffrin. He has served as a US Olympic Committee Team Physician for the past four Winter Olympic Games, with the US Olympic Committee entrusting the care of their athletes to Dr. Sterett in Salt Lake City, Torino, Vancouver and Sochi.
Dr. Sterett is most proud of having raised his two sons, Stefan and William, as a single parent.
